Many people are divided in opinions about bankruptcy.   Some think that bankruptcy is a legal way to cheat creditors out of their money.   Some think that bankruptcy is the result of mismanagement and indicates some fault or wrongdoing on the part of a person that files for bankruptcy.   Some, especially those that have received the benefit of the legal protections from creditors offered by the bankruptcy code, are thankful that they were able to start over.

The truth is that bankruptcy, like many things in life, can be used and abused in all the ways mentioned above.   But for the most part, bankruptcy is the last resort for desperate, hard working, honest people in financial trouble due, often times, to circumstances no fault of their own.   For a host of various reasons, bankruptcy is a very necessary component of modern economics and essential to the business community at large. 

For moral people, and especially Christians, debts should be paid as they are able to pay them.   But when circumstances change, and benign debt becomes like a cancer devouring resources and the ability to provide for the necessities of life;  and all other options fail to cure a cancerous debt load, the Christian should thank God that He established a country like the United States that preserves the Biblical principles of debt forgiveness and new starts.   Then, move forward with courage in the God of second chances;  recover their financial strength;  remember these life lessons and again strive to become free and independent people that will “make as much as they can, save as much as they can, and give as much as they can”.
